Navy's heavyweight and lightweight crew teams combined to win three titles at the Eastern Association of Rowing Championship Regatta, held Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

Each program won its respective second novice title, while the lightweights also claimed the second varsity championship.

In the heavyweight portion of the regatta, Navy's second novice boat advanced to the grand final with a second-place finish in its heat, finishing nearly three seconds behind Princeton. The final was a different story, however, as the top-seeded Midshipmen won the race with a time of 6:10.04, nearly three seconds in front of the same Tigers crew (6:12.95).

Also reaching the grand final for the heayvweight team was the third varsity boat. The Mids were seeded seventh in the event, but advanced to the grand final with a third-place finish in its heat, then placed sixth in the final with a time of 6:24.99.

Navy's first varsity boat entered Sunday seeded 10th, but ended the competition with a seventh-place finish. The Mids placed fourth in its heat, but came back to win the petite final with a time of 5:49.14, edging second-place Dartmouth by over one second.

Navy's second varsity boat placed third in its heat, then had a sixth-place showing in the petite final with a time of 6:10.35.

In the first novice race, Navy placed third in its heat with a time of 5:59.28, less than one-half of a second out of second place and just 1.5 seconds out of first place. The Mids went on to record a second-place finish in the petite final with a time of 6:08.30.

After placing just one of its boats in the grand final and two others in petite finals at the 2001 EARC Regatta, Navy placed a pair of boats in grand finals and the remaining three in petite finals this year.

Navy's lightweight program also had an improved showing this year. The Mids placed four of its five boats in grand finals one year ago, but all five advanced to the finals this year.

The second varsity crew was seeded third heading into its preliminary heat where it placed second, a little more than two seconds behind Princeton. The second-place finish put the Mids into the grand final where Navy posted a three-second victory over second-place Yale and a five-second win over Princeton with a time of 5:55.34.

Navy's second novice boat was seeded first in its event, and the Mids held their seed by not only winning its preliminary heat but also the grand final with a time of 6:41.90.

Navy's first varsity crew placed second in its heat, then placed fourth in a very tight grand final. Top-seeded Yale won the title with a time of 5:52.09, with second-place Princeton (5:55.7), third-place Cornell (5:56.54) and fourth-place Navy (5:56.54) all close behind.

The first novice race was expected to come down to top-seeded Navy and second-seeded Yale. Both teams struggled a bit in the preliminaries -- Navy finished third in its heat, Yale second in its race. Yale would go on to win the grand final, posting a 6:09.32 time in the finals to narrowly edge the Midshipmen who clocked in with a 6:10.29.

In the third varsity race, Navy placed third with a time of 6:20.77.
