Mids Prepare for IRA National Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy heavyweight crew team's varsity, second varsity and freshman boats all received top-10 seedings for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. Navy's varsity boat was seeded 10th in the field of 24 boats, while the other two Navy entries were both seeded ninth.
Navy's varsity entry will begin competition Thursday at 7:48 a.m. when it races in a qualifying heat against second-seeded California, No. 7 Boston University, Georgetown, Michigan and MIT. The second varsity boat for Navy will soon follow as it is slated to race in the 8:24 a.m. qualifying heat against No. 1 Washington, No. 8 Wisconsin, Michigan and St. Joseph's. The freshman eight entry will then compete against No. 1 California, No. 8 Northeastern, MIT, Cornell and Yale in the 9:36 a.m. qualifying heat
The first and second-place boats in each of the varsity, second varsity and freshman qualifying heats will automatically advance to Friday's semifinal races, while the remaining boats in each heat will race again Thursday afternoon.
The Mids will enter a total of eight boats in this week's championship, one year after five of the eight Navy entries advanced to either the grand or petite final at the event. Navy's varsity boat has reached the IRA grand final in two of the last three years, placing sixth in 2002, eighth in '03 and fourth last year.
