Mids Place Third at Adams Cup
Links associated with this release: Navy's heavyweight crew team placed third behind Harvard and Pennsylvania in the first varsity race at the Adams Cup, Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Harvard, projected to once again be the top team on the East Coast, won the Adams Cup with a time of 5:33.7, followed in second place by Pennsylvania at 5:40.06 and Navy in third with a time of 5:46.8. Navy had a slim lead over both boats after the first 500 meters, but Harvard pulled even and took about a one-half boat length lead at the midway point in the race. Penn made its move with just 500 meters remaining, but didn't pull comfortably ahead of the Mids until the very end. "This was a much better performance than we had last year," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "We are still not where we would like to be at, but we are closing the gap." Despite the third-place showing in the first varsity race, the Midshipmen had an otherwise strong day on the water. Navy placed second in both the second and third varsity races and won both of the novice races. Harvard won the second varsity race with a time of 5:49.7, with Navy second at 6:01.6 and Penn third with a clocking of 6:03.5. The Crimson also won the third varsity race, narrowly edging the Mids 5;55.5-5:58.4. In the freshman races, the Mids held off Harvard to win the first novice race, 5:54.0-5:56.6, as well as posting a seven-second victory over the Crimson in the second novice race. "(Assistant Coach) Chris (Allsopp) and I are both very excited about our plebe boats," said Clothier. "This is the first time in a while our freshmen have won a race at the Adams Cup, and its been even longer since we won both novice races." Navy will be back on the water next weekend when the Mids participate in the George Washington Invite.
