Navy Places Fourth at Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Navy heavyweight crew team saw its varsity boat place fourth in the grand final of the Copley Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic with a time of 5:47.93, Sunday afternoon on Mission Bay in San Diego.

California won the race with a time of 5:43.70, Stanford was second with a time of 5:45.17 and Northeastern placed third with a clocking of 5:45.92. Rounding out the field was Penn in fifth place with a time of 5:53.49 and Purdue in sixth place with a time of 6:09.93.

"Cal just blasted off at the start of the race, but we were second after the first 500 meters of the course," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "Northeastern and Stanford pulled up on us in the second 500, then we battled Penn over the remainder of the course.

"I think the race got away from us a bit. We seemed to race better Saturday when we won our heat than we did today. But it is still early in the year and this was a great opportunity for us to race and measure ourselves against some of the best crews in the country."

The entire Navy heavyweight crew team will next be in action Saturday as part of the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River.
