Navy IC Sailing Has Strong Weekend Highlighted by Women's Team Advancing to Nationals

April 27, 2005

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The MAISA Women's Qualifier was hosted by Georgetown University and attended by 14 teams from Navy's district. On Saturday, the competitors saw a good breeze outside in the river. At the end of day one, after six races, Katie Whitman was in fourth and Charlotte Hill was tied for first. Navy was third overall. St. Mary's had a substantial lead, and spots two through four were all close. Sunday the breeze was lighter and race committee opted for sailing in the turning basin to quicken the rotations. They sailed six races inside in very shifty conditions and then the race committee chose to move the course outside for the last race in each division. The current was ripping and breeze filled in strong. The points were close at the end, with St. Mary's winning by 12 points with 60, Navy 72, Georgetown 75 and ODU with 85. Katie Whitman and Slava Haywas finished third in "A" division with 39 points. Hill and Andrea White finished second in "B" division with 33 points. These four, along with Catherine Long and Kristen Ullman qualified for the ICSA Women's North American Dinghy Championship hosted by the University of Texas in Austin on June 1-3.

The coed team traveled to Cornell for the MAISA Open. This regatta is the freshman spring championship. Eleven teams competed in 420's. The breeze was moderate on Saturday and built by Sunday. The main competition for our team was Hobart and William Smith and Kings Point. Cullen Shaughnessy and Krysta Anthony had a tough time breaking into the top two on Saturday, but fired it up on Sunday. Rob Ramirez and Mike Mullee had another great weekend, claiming their division for the third weekend in a row. In the end Navy couldn't overcome HWS A division's performance on Saturday. HWS finished first with 60 points, while Navy took second with 71 points.

The coed team also traveled to Connecticut College for the Thompson Trophy. Eighteen teams from around the country participated in this intersectional regatta. The regatta was very windy both days. The current was going with the wind making the water very flat making it a major factor. The fleets were deep with talent. Navy's "B" division was maintaining third most of Sunday until the very end. The Mids finished 12th overall with 322 points over the 17-race regatta. Navy finished 11th with 176 points in "A" division with Garth Fasano skippering and Kristen Sproat (races 1-4, 7-16) Lauren Sutehall (17) and Chuck Fulmer (5-6) crewing. John Keith with Lauren Sutehall (1-2, 9-12), and John Appelbaum (3-8, 13-17) crewing finished seventh in "B" division with 146 points. USC won the regatta with 235 points. HWS was the top MAISA team, finishing 3rd.

The coed team traveled to Two Rivers Yacht Basin for the Delaware Spring Open. Eleven teams competed in the regatta. Saturday's wind was very light and puffy. There was a layer of oil on top of the water, which made seeing the breeze touch down very difficult. Sunday it was more windy and choppy. The team did an excellent job of not sailing down to their competition, winning 22 of the 24 races sailed. Dave Parker and Amanda Burney finished first in A division with 14 points. Ian Gill and John Leone finished first in B division with 14 points as well.

Lastly, Navy also held the annual Ann Campbell Regatta on Wednesday of last week. There were 20 boats on the line for the start. Six races were sailed off Trident Point, in shifty 3-10 knots blowing out of Ego Alley/SSA. Cullen Shaughnessy with Krysta Anthony finished first with 35 points. Garth Fasano and Kristen Sproat finished second with 36 points. Chuck Fulmer with John Appelbaum were third with 38 points.

This upcoming weekend, Navy will host the coed dinghy qualifiers for Nationals.
