Robert Morris College midfielder Mavis Danso (Junior / Accra, Ghana) participated with the Ghana National team in the 2006 African Nations Cup over the past two weeks. Ghana won their initial group with wins over Mali (1-0), Cameroon (2-1), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (3-1) and then went on to defeat South Africa 1-0 in the semi-final round to secure a berth to the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup that will be held in China in September, 2007.
"It is a great honor to represent my country and to help it achieve this success," stated an elated Danso. "I only hope with God's help that we can stay healthy and have another successful World Cup for all of Ghana."
Danso, the 2006 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, started all four games in the tournament for Ghana at left back. This will be Danso's second World Cup appearance as she started all three games in the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup including a 1-0 loss to world power China and a 2-1 victory over Australia in which Robert Morris alum Alberta Sackey scored both goals. Danso led Robert Morris in scoring in 2006 with 16 goals, 11 assists, and 43 points from her central midfielder position earning her CCAC All-Conference 1st team honors. She is set to graduate with her Bachelor's degree in Accounting in 2008 and maintains a 3.41 grade point average.
Ghana will face Nigeria on November 11th for the championship of the African Nations Cup.
