SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Hastings College (Neb.) defeated Judson College (Ill.), 70-43, Wednesday in the first round of the 15th annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship. The 2006 event is being held at the Tyson Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
Katie Dent pulled down 18 rebounds as the Hastings Broncos out-rebounded the Eagles 52-34. Hastings dominated most statistical categories, out-shooting Judson 47 percent to 25 percent. Neither team was able take care of the Ball well. Between the two teams there were 62 turnovers, 36 for the Broncos and 26 for Judson.
Four Broncos scored double digits: Stacy Svoboda (19), Lynnze Martinsen (16), Maggie Schmaderer (12), and Kay Broekemeier (11). Svoboda was 7 of 12 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds.
Offensively for Judson Kim Watson led the way, scoring 22 points. She also had addedsteals. The national leaders in team steals, Judson finished the game with a total of 24 swipes. Sara Brendemuehl grabbed seven rebounds, had eight points and two steals. This was second consecutive and sixth overall appearance for Judson in the tournament.
Hastings will play the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) Friday at 10:15 a.m.
