Marian Names Karras Football Coach

Karras is no stranger to the NAIA, having served as an assistant at St. Xavier (Ill.) and St. Francis (Ill.)

From AP

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ted Karras Jr. was appointed coach Monday at Marian College (Ind.), an NAIA school that will make its football debut in 2007.

Karras is the son of former NFL player Ted Karras Sr. and nephew of actor and former NFL star Alex Karras.

Karras was the coach the past three years at Rose-Hulman (Ind.), where his teams compiled a 14-16 record. Before that, he was offensive coordinator at St. Xavier University (Ill.) in Chicago and an assistant at University of St. Francis (Ill.), and Lake Forest College (Ill.).

He played four years at Northwestern and was the head coach at Andrean High School in Merrillville from 1996-98. He also played one game for the Washington Redskins in 1987.

His father, an offensive lineman and linebacker, played from 1958-66, primarily with Chicago. His uncle, a defensive tackle for Detroit, was one of the game's stars during the 1960s and was suspended for the 1963 season by commissioner Pete Rozelle for betting on games.

Marian, a private school of about 1,300 students, will become Indiana's 21st football-playing college.
