Dec. 11, 2002 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Utah middle blocker Kim Turner was named to the 2002 AVCA West All-Region Team, while Ute outside hitter Sylva Strzinková was an honorable mention selection. Colorado State University outside hitter Tess Rogers was tabbed West Region Freshman of the Year. This season marks the fourth straight that the Mountain West Conference was represented on the AVCA All-Region squad. Since 1999, 11 MWC student-athletes have earned all-region accolades and six have moved on to All-America status. Turner advances to the national ballot for All-America consideration, which will be announced Dec. 18. Turner, a 6-2 junior from Chandler, Ariz. (Dobson, HS), helped the Utes become the first MWC team to repeat as conference tournament champions this season. This year's MWC Co-Player of the Year and the only two-time MWC Championship MVP, Turner led the league and ranked sixth nationally in blocks per game (1.64) and ranked second in the MWC in kills per game (3.87). Turner, who also earned AVCA All-Region honors as a sophomore last year, currently ranks third on the MWC career blocks list with 500. Strzinková, a 6-1 senior from Brno, Czech Republic (Salt Lake CC), finished the season as the only MWC player ranked in the league's top 11 for kills (4th, 3.78 per game), digs (11th, 2.54 per game) and aces (10th, .30 per game). Strzinková is a two-time All-MWC selection.
Rogers, a 5-11 freshman from Wiggins, Colo. (Merino HS), set the MWC freshman record for kills this season with 419 and ranked fifth in the league in kills per game (3.77). Rogers, the 2002 MWC Freshman of the Year, paced Colorado State the regular season Mountain West Conference title, the third straight for the Rams.
