FIRST ROUND/QUARTERFINAL MWC CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES
Nov. 22 (Wednesday)
#8 New Mexico vs. #9 Air Force, 3:30 p.m.
New Mexico leads all-time MWC Tournament series, 1-0. The Lobos and Falcons meet in the MWC Championship for the first time since the quarterfinals of the 1999 tournament. New Mexico is 1-7 all-time in tournament play, while Air Force will be looking for their first-ever win in MWC Championship play.

Nov. 23 (Thursday)
#3 Colorado State vs. #6 TCU, 11 a.m. (the mtn.)
Colorado State leads the all-time series 7-1, and swept both regular-season meetings this season. The Rams and Horned Frogs are meeting in the MWC Tournament for the first time. Colorado State is 14-4 all-time in conference tournament play, while TCU is 1-1 after competing for the first time last year.The Rams are three-time tournament champions (1999, 2003, 2004), having advanced to thechampionship match five times (3-2).

#2 BYU vs. #7 SanDiego State, 40 minutes after the end of CSU/TCU (the mtn.)
The Cougars are 34-14 all time vs. the Aztecs, winning 20 of the last 22 meetings overall. BYU and SanDiego State meet in the first round of the MWC tournament for the second time in three years. The Cougars defeated SDSU, 3-0, in the 2004 tournament. The 2000 tournament champion BYU, a No. 2seed for the second time, is 12-6 all-time in MWC Tournaments, while San Diego State is 3-7.

#1 Utah vs. Winner of #8 New Mexico/#9 Air Force, 4 p.m. (the mtn.)
Utah leads the all-time series vs. New Mexico, 37-27 and hold a 19-0 all-time record vs. Air Force. The three-time and defending tournament champion Utes are 15-4 all-time in the MWC Tournament play. Utah is the No. 1 seed for the second time in three years, and is looking to advance to the finals forthe sixth consecutive time.

 

 

#4 UNLV vs. #5 Wyoming, 40 minutes after the end of BYU/UNM-AFA winner (the mtn.)
UNLV has the lead in the all-time series, 12-11, and split the two regular season meetings withWyoming in 2006. UNLV and Wyoming meet for the second time in MWC Tournament play. The Rebels won the last meeting, 3-1, in the 2004 tournament. UNLV is 3-7 all-time in the MWC Championship, while Wyoming has an all-time mark of 0-7.

MWC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE TELEVISED
For the seventh straight year, the Mountain West Volleyball Championship will be televised. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be televised by the mtn. - MountainWest Sports Network. All four ofThursday's quarterfinal matches and Friday's first semifinal contest will be shown live, with the second semifinal to be shown via same day tape delay at 9:30 p.m. (PT). For the third straight season, the MWC Tournament championship match will be shown live nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV).The championship contest will also be streamed live as part of CSTV's All-Access package, available onthe CSTV (www.cstv.com) and MWC (www.themwc.com) Web sites.

MWC CHAMPIONSHIP FACTS

  • The MWC Championship will be played in Las Vegas, Nev., for the second consecutive year. The event has also been played in Fort Collins, Colo., three times, Provo, Utah, twice and San Diego once.
  • Utah and Colorado State are the only team to repeat as conference tournament champions. The Utes and Rams are also the only league teams to win the championship three times. Utah won thetournament title in 2001, 2002 and 2005, while CSU took the crown home in 1999, 2003 and 2004.
  • BYU is the only No. 4 seed to advance to the championship match (2002), while Utah is the only No. 3 seed to win the tournament title, doing so twice (2002 and 2005). The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds have met in the finals in five of the last seven years , with the No. 2 seed winning four of thosematches.
  • The MWC Tournament has produced three different champions in seven years.
  • Colorado State has played a five-game match in five of the seven MWC Tournaments. The Rams are 2-3 in five-game matches in tournament play, including an 0-2 mark in five-game championship matches.
