Volleyball Team Relies On Health To Spark Revival Patchwork lineup has hindered UNLV squad.
Oct. 15, 2002
By Jeff Wollard LAS VEGAS - For the UNLV volleyball team and coach Deitre Collins, the season has been much like a game of musical chairs. Each time an injured player gets healthy enough to return to the roster, another goes down. As a result, Collins has spent as much time developing new lineup combinations as coaching. But for Collins, who hasn't had a healthy squad in well over a year, things might be taking a turn for the better. Though the Rebels are off to their worst start since 1999, 4-15 with 10 straight losses and 0-5 in the Mountain West Conference, help has arrived. Several key players, including middle blockers Blair Wilkes, Christina Kirschner and Sheila Ocasio-Clemente, have returned in the past two weeks, and Collins hopes they can help to salvage an otherwise disappointing season. "(Injuries) have hurt us tremendously," Collins said, "because the areas where we've been strong in the past are where we've suffered the most this year. This has forced us to become a smaller defensive team and much less offensive."
