Mountain West Conference Individuals in NCAA Tennis Singles and Doubles Utah's Payne-Dorney Upsets No. 2 Seed Walker; UNLV's Malec Advances

Colorado Springs, Colo. Four singles players and a doubles team from the Mountain West Conference are in action today as the individual portion of the 2000 NCAA Division I Women¹s Tennis Championship got underway. The event runs May 22-26 at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif., hosted by the University of Pepperdine. The first round of the 64-player singles and 32-team doubles competitions began at 9 a.m. with New Mexico¹s Ana Friganovic among the first on the courts. Friganovic suffered a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Ivona Mihailova of Mississippi. UNLV¹s No. 29-ranked Katarina Malec came through with a solid 6-0, 6-1 win over USC¹s Veronika Safarova in her opening match at 10:30 a.m. Malec advances to face Camina Giraldo of Clemson at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 23. Utah¹s No. 59-ranked Megan Payne-Dorny battled back to upset the tournament¹s No. 2-seed Janet Walker of Texas (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) and advances to meet Florida¹s Jessica Lehnhoff also at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. No. 95-ranked Eline Chiew from BYU is currently playing Ester Knox from team champion Georgia. The lone Mtn. West representative in women¹s doubles action, UNLV¹s No. 27 ranked duo of Malec and Marianne Bakken will be in action this evening against the team of Dolman and Galoustova of Oklahoma.
