MWC Weekly Women's Tennis Award BYU's Sofia Holden honored
May 3, 2005 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -¬ Sofia Holden of BYU has been selected the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week following the MWC Women's Tennis Championship last week, where the Cougars won their second consecutive women's team tournament title. Holden, a sophomore from Mexico City, Mexico, won all three of her singles matches and both of her completed doubles matches at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles for BYU. The Cougars won all three of their matches en route to the title at the MWC Women's Tennis Championship in San Diego. BYU defeated Air Force in the quarterfinals, San Diego State in the semifinals and UNLV in the championship match. The No. 23-ranked Cougars earned the MWC automatic berth into the NCAA Championship that begins May 13. Holden defeated Sharon Marin of UNLV in the championship match, 7-6, 6-2, to give BYU a 3-2 advantage against the Lady Rebels. She also clinched the winning point for BYU against San Diego State as she defeated the Aztecs' Indra Erichsen, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals. Holden teamed with Olga Boultycheva to win matches against Air Force and San Diego State, both by an 8-1 verdict. Holden was named to the all-MWC women's singles tennis team for the second consecutive season for her efforts this season.
