April Showers Awards

Women's tennis star earns second MWC honor this month.

April 19, 2001

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the second time this month, UNLV sophomore Paulina Janus has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Thursday.

A native of Warsaw, Poland, Janus (13-7) posted a 5-1 combined record in singles and doubles play last week at the No. 1 position.

Ranked 67th in the nation, Janus stunned No. 31 Kim Neggemeyer from eighth-ranked Fresno State and then added victories over the top players from Air Force and 39th-ranked New Mexico to make it seven wins in her last eight singles matches.

In doubles, Janus teamed with Agnieszka Abram to go 2-1 at the top spot to improve to 8-6 this spring.

Janus' late-season rally helped UNLV grab four straight MWC victories to close the regular season, which earned the defending champions a third seed in the conference championship. The 48th-ranked Lady Rebels currently are preparing to defend their crown at the second-annual tournament, April 26-28, in Fort Collins, Colo.

With the honor, which came in the league's final player-of-the-week voting this season, Janus became the third Lady Rebel in history to win the award twice in the same year, joining Katarina Malec (four times in 2000) and Marianne Vallin (twice in 1997 as part of the Western Athletic Conference).
