Colorado State Tennis Hosts Big Weekend

The Rams will face UTEP on Friday and San Diego State on Sunday.

This weekend, the Colorado State tennis team hosts a pair of Mountain West Conference matches as well as a non-conference dual in Fort Collins. UTEP will face the Rams on Friday at 1:00 p.m. The Miners are 5-10 this season in dual play and hold a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series against Colorado State. Both teams have defeated Wyoming and Air Force and have lost to Wisconsin and Utah. Saturday the Rams play the No. 39 UNLV Rebels who are 9-6 overall in dual play and 2-1 in conference play. The Rebels are led by freshman Elena Gantcheva who is ranked No. 28 in the nation. The pair of Gyorgi Zsiros and Clair Smith are 60th in the country in doubles play. CSU looks to gain its first win ever against San Diego State on Sunday. SDSU is ranked No. 40 in the nation with a 1-2 conference record and a 10-7 overall record.

Rams Successful in Wyoming
Ram tennis came home from Wyoming with two wins and a loss over the weekend. The loss came from No. 37 New Mexico. Emily Kirchem scored the Rams' lone point by beating No. 48 Maja Kovacek at the No. 1 position. This is her first win over a nationally-ranked individual this season. Colorado State defeated Wyoming on Friday 4-3 despite losing No. 1 player Dasha Zhurin to an injury. Jessica Jones and Alex Paganetti sealed the win for the Rams by winning at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. The Rams brought home the last win on Sunday by trouncing Air Force 6-1.

 

 

Next on the Schedule
The Rams host No. 46 Denver on April 6th at Rolland Moore Park. Denver is 10-2 this season. CSU hopes to improve its 3-9 all-time record against DU's Pioneers.

Ram Notes:
-Sophomore Emily Kirchem leads the team in singles play with a 17-8 overall singles record. She is 2-1 at the No. 1 position and 11-2 at the No. 2 position in dual play.

-Senior Alex Paganetti and Junior Jasmin Singh hold the best dual doubles record with a 9-6 mark. They have three wins at No. 2 and six wins at No. 3.

-Colorado State is 0-4 against nationally-ranked opponents this dual season with the losses to Wisconsin, Nebraska, BYU and New Mexico.

-The Rams are 2-3 against conference opponents this year. They have the second-highest season win/loss percentage in the conference at .688, behind BYU with a percentage of .833.

-Ram tennis had the longest 7-0 winning streak in team history with six 7-0 wins earlier this season.

-Colorado State tennis set a record with two Mountain West Conference Players of the Week this season, Emily Kirchem on January 26th and Dasha Zhurin on Feb. 16th. This is the second time Kirchem has been awarded and it is Zhurin's first nod as Player of the Week.
