Katarina Malec, Sr., UNLV Malec, ranked No. 41 in the nation, did not lose a set in going a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles play during the week. Although UNLV posted a 2-2 record as a team, Malec claimed all four singles and doubles matches in the No. 1 position. She has won seven straight matches in both singles and doubles and improved to 14-2 in duals and 27-5 in overall singles. Her doubles record when teamed with Marianne Bakken is now 17-4 overall and 14-1 at No. 1 doubles. She started the week with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Oklahoma State¹s Maria Galoustova, then blanked Bowling Green¹s Abby Bratton 6-0, 6-0. She then defeated Tulsa¹s Monica Poveda 6-3, 6-3 and Cindy Tow from Boston College 6-0, 6-4. The highlight of her four doubles victories was a 7-6, 6-3 win over Oklahoma State¹s No. 30-ranked Galoustova and Ashleigh Dolman. This is the third player of the week honor for Malec and UNLV this season. UNLV Host of 2000 Mtn. West Women¹s Tennis Championship
Team-By-Team Notes BYU also took this past week off and next competes against Oregon at San Diego State on Mar. 24. The Cougars then face the Aztecs on the 25th. Colorado State returned to action after a 10-day break to defeat Wichita State, 5-3, on the Air Force Academy courts Mar. 21. Bobbe Vasas and Catherine Sullivan continued their outstanding play for the Rams by posting their seventh consecutive singles matches. New Mexico is coming off a split of weekend matches in California, defeating No. 74 Pacific (6-3) but falling to No. 5 California (7-1). Dominika Gerwin is a perfect 8-0 at No. 4 singles in duals. The Lobos will be idle until Apr. 2 at New Mexico State. San Diego State registered a 3-1 record this past week as Lindsey Hedberg and Katie Becker led the way with 4-0 records for the week. The Aztecs host conference foe BYU on Mar. 25 and Oregon on the 26th. UNLV posted a 2-2 record during the week, although Katarina Malec claimed her third Mtn. West Player of the Week honor by going undefeated in singles and doubles. The Rebels already defeated No. 43 Oregon, 6-3, yesterday and will host Kansas State today. Coming off a week off, Utah will next play host to BYU in a conference match on Mar. 31. Wyoming returned from a California roadtrip with a 2-1
slate including wins over Iowa State (5-4) and at CS Fullerton (6-3). The Cowgirls will play at
Montana for their next two matches, meeting the Grizzlies on Mar. 24 and Gonzaga on the 25th.
