MWC Tennis Players of the Week UNLV's Elliot Wronski, Utah's Elizabeth Ferris Capture Weekly Awards
Feb. 21, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Elliot Wronski and Utah's Elizabeth Ferris have been named the Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week. Wronski posted the biggest win of his young career with a straight-set shocker at the top of the singles' lineup, upsetting 26th-ranked Jakub Cech of Fresno State (6-2, 6-3). The sophomore also picked up a doubles victory with senior Brett Hunter at the No. 2 position, defeating the 44th-ranked Bulldog duo of Tejesvi Veerepalli and Charles Irie (8-3). A native of Cheltenham, England, Wronski now sports a dual-match record of 4-2 this season (22-9 career). He earned his first-ever national ranking in singles when the Fila Collegiate Tennis Rankings were released earlier today, making his debut at the No. 85 spot. This marks the program's highest regular-season individual ranking since Henner Nehles finished at No. 58 in May 2005. Ferris, a native of Anaheim, Calif., won all three of her singles matches at the No. 1 position last week. The junior took a straight-set match from Weber State's Inalise Pienaar (6-1, 6-0) before taking hard-fought victories over Kansas State's Viviana Yrureta, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), and Kansas' Elizaveta Avdeeva , 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-5. The junior also notched a doubles win at the No. 1 position with sophomore Leigh Walsh, defeating WSU's Pienaar and Gabi Venditto, 8-3.
