Colorado State Signs Two

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Colorado State softball head coach Mary Yori announced the signing of two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Both will enroll at Colorado State in the fall. Lauren Cusick, a third baseman from South Salem High School in Salem, Oregon, was named to the Oregon State Athletic Association First-Team All-State in both 2002 and 2003 and has yet to play her senior season. Her junior season she was also the Valley League Co-Player of the Year. "Lauren is a very strong hitter and has good versatility at all the infield positions," said Yori. "We are looking forward to what she accomplishes in her last year of high school before joining the Rams." Julia Kloppe is a first baseman from Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins and becomes the first Fort Collins student-athlete to play softball for the Rams since All-American Holly Schmillen. Kloppe is a three-time All-State selection and was recently named the Rocky Mountain News All-Colorado Player of the Year. "Julia is a great hitter and a solid first baseman," Yori stated. "We are very excited to have Julia join our porgram as she is the first Fort Collins player we have signed since coming to CSU. She is a good defensive player at either first or third base, where she played prior to her shoulder surgery in December.
"Both girls are heady, athletic players with great softball instincts. They will add quality depth to our infield and should immediately compete for both playing time and starting positions. They are both power hitters who can hit the long ball in the clutch and the addition of these two fine athletes are a real boost to our program." The Colorado State softball team won the Mountain West Conference Tournament last season for the first time in school history and return eight of nine starters from that team.
