Jacobs Named Head Softball Coach

Former Ute assistant takes helm after eight seasons at Miami University.

SALT LAKE CITY - Angie Jacobs, a former Utah assistant softball coach and the all-time winningest head coach at Miami University, is returning to the U. as its head softball coach, senior associate athletic director Mary Bowman announced today.

Jacobs, who has spent the last eight seasons at the helm of Miami's (Ohio) program, was an assistant on the Ute staff from 1996-98.

"We are very excited to bring someone like Angie Jacobs on our staff," said Bowman. "Her tireless dedication and experience at recruiting in the softball community will be of great benefit to our program."

Said Jacobs, "I'm originally from Oregon and have coached at Utah and it has always been a goal of mine to return to the West. The University of Utah is an incredible place and I feel extremely fortunate to have been chosen to lead its softball program. I am looking forward to the challenge."

The Medford, Ore., native guided the RedHawks to a school-record 172 wins during her tenure. Jacobs also led MU to a Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA berth in 2005, both firsts in school history. Jacobs coached four all-region players, 18 All-MAC selections and 11 MAC all-tournament designees.

She has had three seasons with 25 or more wins and chalked up 34 victories in 2005. The 34 wins stands as the second most in MU annals.

Prior to Miami, Jacobs was an assistant coach at Utah, Oregon (1994-96), San Jose State (1992-94) and Saint Mary's College in Moraga, Calif. (1990-92).

Aside from her head coaching duties, Jacobs has been a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association since 1991 and attained a four-star coaching certification from the National Fastpitch Coaches College in December, 2005, the highest certification possible.

She played collegiately at Cal, earning All-Pac 10 honors as a senior first baseman and catcher. She helped the Golden Bears to the Pac-10 title in 1987 and was a member of the third-place team at the NCAA College World Series in 1986. Jacobs garnered all-West Region honors in 1987 and 1988 and was named the NorPac Rookie of the Year as a freshman.

Jacobs has played softball in the professional ranks as well. She spent the summer of 1998 as a member of the Women's Professional Fastpitch League's Orlando Wahoos and was selected to the WPF All-Star team that season.

A two-time Amateur Softball Association All-American, Jacobs helped lead the ASA's Redding Rebels (Calif.) to three consecutive national titles from 1993-95.

As a player/coach for the Bologna Queens of the Italian Softball League in 1989, Jacobs directed the team to a second-place finish in the Italian Championships.

Jacobs earned a bachelor's in psychology at California and completed her course work for her master's in sport psychology from John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, Calif. Jacobs is currently working on a second master's in kinesiology with an emphasis in coaching from Texas Woman's University.
