MWC Softball Players of the Week BYU's Quiocho and Gwyn honored.
April 24, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU freshman Angeline Quiocho and junior right-hander Christina Gwyn have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Quiocho a Walnut, Calif., native, went 4-for-5 in the double-header vs. Colorado State with two home runs, three RBI and her team-leading 11th stolen base of the season. With her team trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Quiocho smashed a long lead-off home run to center field. Later in the fourth inning, she tied the game with an RBI-double to left field. In Friday night's game against New Mexico, Quiocho hit the go-ahead home run that captured the lead for good for BYU. Her swing gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead and followed her unassisted double-play in the top of the order. Quiocho also came through with some clutch running as she beat the tag on each base on three separate plays to keep BYU's rally alive vs. the Lobos. Quiocho eventually scored the game-winning run to give the Cougars a 6-5 win. Gwyn, hailing from Keller, Texas, pitched six shutout innings against Southern Utah on the way to recording her 12th win of the season. She also struck out eight and gave up only three hits against the in-state rival. Gwyn recorded another eight strikeouts against conference-foe Colorado State. Against the Rams, she allowed seven hits in the first two innings but gave up only three the rest of the way. In the fifth inning vs. New Mexico, the Lobos cut the Cougars' lead down to one as Gwyn came in for teammate Christie Zinanti and forced the Lobos' to ground out and remain one run short of the tie. Gwyn went on to pitch 2.1 shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out two. -MWC-
