Player and Pitcher of the Week

UNLV's Byrne and SDSU's Janelli take home conference honors

March 15, 2004

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV senior outfielder Bridget Byrne and San Diego State junior pitcher Cori Janelli have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Byrne, a Las Vegas native, hit .632 (12-for-19) from the plate with a triple, three RBI and seven runs scored, as the Rebels went 4-1 at the UNLV Tournament II last weekend. She had multiple hits in four of five games, starting with a 5-for-9 effort on the first day of the tournament against Southern Utah and Long Island. Byrne went 2-for-5 from the plate and drove in two runs against the Thunderbirds, helping UNLV to a 10-3 victory. Against Long Island, she scored two runs and drove in another in a 3-for-4 performance from the plate as the Rebels tallied a 6-1 win. In a 2-1 loss to No. 14 Oregon, Byrne led off the game with a single and scored on a Kacey Ellis single two batters later. In UNLV's 8-1 win over Jacksonville, she collected three hits, including her first career triple, and scored three runs. In the championship game against Long Island, she went 3-for-3 and scored a run as the Rebels brought home a 2-0 victory and the tournament crown.

Janelli went 1-1 at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic in Fresno, Calif., striking out 11 batters and giving up nine hits, no walks and two earned runs in 13 innings of work. She began the tournament tossing a complete game shutout in the Aztecs' 1-0 upset victory over tournament host and 15th-ranked Fresno State, striking out five batters and giving up only three hits. After giving up a first inning two-run homer to UCLA's Stephanie Ramos, Janelli held the top-ranked Bruins scoreless for the rest of the contest, retiring seven straight batters and striking out three in a row at one point. She struck out a total of six, while scattering five hits the remainder of the game, as SDSU fell to No. 1 UCLA, 2-0.
