Top-Seeded Brigham Young Advances To MWC Championship Game With 2-1 Win Over New Mexico

Summer Tobias (17-6) strikes out a MWC Championship record 14 batters.

May 13, 2005

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Top-seeded Brigham Young advanced to its second Mountain West Conference championship game in its program's history with a 2-1 win in ten innings over fifth-seeded New Mexico Friday evening at the San Diego State Softball Field. The Cougars (43-12) will take on either No. 2 seed UNLV or No. 3 seed Colorado State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. for the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA championships. The Lobos end their 2005 season at 16-34.

BYU picked up their first run in the bottom of the sixth, as Ianeta Le'i hit a one-out, bases-loaded RBI single to centerfield scoring Krystle Chamberlain from third. The Cougars got hits in the inning from Lauren Watson-Perry, Paige Paramore, plus a walk to Debbie Dodds.

New Mexico tied it up in the top of the seventh, as Cassie Chavez laced a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch, then, with two outs, Christina Rios hit a full-count, RBI single to left field to plate the tying run.

BYU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but could not push across the winning run until in the bottom of the 10th when Dodds walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Paramore singled to leftfield, scoring Dodds and ending the extra-inning affair.

Summer Tobias (17-6) picked up the win for BYU, throwing a complete-game four-hitter, striking out a MWC Championship record 14 batters. Ashley Perkins (5-15) took the loss for UNM, going four innings in relief, allowing a run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
