Cougs Split at Southern Utah 10-1, 11-10 BYU improves to 32-14.

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Despite pounding in 20 runs in in 12 innings of play on the day, the BYU women's softball team (32-14, 9-6) split a doubleheader at Southern Utah (24-17) 10-1 (5), 10-11. BYU will play the final regular season games at Utah on Saturday in a doubleheader at noon. In game one, sophomore Lauren Watson nailed her second triple of the season on the first at bat of the day. She was singled home by freshman Neta Lei for a quick 1-0 lead. The Thunderbirds tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second but the Cougars responded well in the top of the third with three runs off two doubles. Seniors Cynthia Fallowfield and Brooke Cadiente hit back-to-back doubles to help the Cougars gain a 4-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Lei hit a grand slam to give the Cougars a 8-1
lead. The home runs was her fifth of the season. Fallowfield and
Cadiente again hit back-to-back doubles to help the Cougars score two
more runs and and win the game 10-1 in five innings due to the mercy
rule.
Freshman Brooke Boyce (10-3) picked up the complete game win giving up only one run and five hits through five innings. In game two, Watson led off the game with a solo home run, her eighth of the season. Junior Oli Keohohou singled later in the inning to score junior Belinda Osborn, who reached on a walk, as the Cougars looked poised for the sweep with a quick 2-0 lead. The Thunderbirds responded well in the bottom of the inning as April Cox belted a grand slam to give Southern Utah a 4-2 lead. Three more runs were tacked on in the second inning for a 7-2 lead. BYU responded well to the challenge and scored two runs in the third inning off another Fallowfield double to tighten the gap to three runs at 7-4. Sophomore Milli Jones scored off a Belinda Osborn sac fly in the fourth inning to bring the Cougars within two runs. With two outs in the fifth, Jones singled in the fifth inning to score junior shortstop Kate Walker. Sophomore Arron Layns scored off a T-bird error to tie the score at seven runs apiece. The Cougars regained the lead in the sixth inning as Fallowfield brought in her third RBI of the game to score pinch runner Katy Barnes. BYU took a 10-7 lead in the top of the seventh as freshman Ashlyn Russell hit a two RBI double to score Lei and Osborn. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Desiree Gutierrez was the hero of the day with a two runs tripled the capped a four-run comeback by the host Thunderbirds that ended the game 11-10. Senior Mandy Flint started the game but was replaced in the second inning by sophomore Niki Andersen (8-5) who picked up the loss in 5 1/3 innings on the mound while striking out six. Tracy Evans-Jones (8-9) was credited with the win. BYU will play at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in San Diego May 8-11 after the final game at Utah on Saturday.
