Softball Splits Two Games

Utes top Saint Mary's, 12-4, fall to Nevada, 5-0.

RENO, Nev. - The University of Utah softball team (18-12-1 overall) split two games today at the Nevada Tournament, topping Saint Mary's, 12-4 (6), in the first game but falling to Nevada, 5-0, in the night cap.

The win snapped Utah's four-game losing streak and dropped SMC's record to 15-19. The Nevada Wolfpack, on the other hand, improve to 13-24 on the year.

Karina Cannon got the start against SMC and got the win. She ups her record to 6-5. Meanwhile, Meghan Dyer is tagged with the loss to Nevada, stumbling to 12-7 for the season.

Staci Hemingway had only two hits on the day but led the offense with two home runs and three RBI. Utah did finish with six homers on the day. Also hitting round-trippers were Diana Phillips (two), Cannon and Tori Medina. The team's most efficient hitter was Phillips as she was 2-for-4 on the day.

Utah completes play at the Nevada Tournament with a single game against Saint Mary's tomorrow. First pitch here in Reno, Nev., is set for 11 a.m. (MDT).

Three home runs in the third inning powered Utah past Saint Mary's here this afternoon as the Utes bagged a six-inning, 12-4 win over the Gaels.

Utah scored in each of the six innings, plating two in each the first, second and fifth innings. It also scored four runs in the third and run each in the fourth and sixth innings.

Up 4-0, Utah doubled its lead in the third. Phillips hit a leadoff home run to make it 5-0, and that was followed by Hemingway's two-run shot and Medina's solo homer.

The Gaels countered with a four-run fourth inning but Phillips' second home run of the game in bottom of the inning pushed Utah's lead back to five runs.

The Utes concluded the game with three runs in the final two frames. Cannon got the start and the win, fanning five and allowing three hits and one walk.

Utah 0, Nevada 5
It was all Nevada as the Wolfpack won their second game in as many days over Utah, 5-0.

Dyer managed to hold the home team scoreless for the first three frames but Nevada broke the scoreless tie in the fourth, plating the first run on Michelle Beach's one-out, RBI single.

But, it was the sixth that did the most damage. Nevada scored four runs on three hits and two Utah errors during that frame.

In all, the Wolfpack finished with eight hits to Utah's three.
