2006 Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Teams Announced

Utah's Letro and Mason earn Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year Awards

Oct. 31, 2006

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Mountain West Conference announced its 2006 women's soccer awards today at its pre-championship banquet in Salt Lake City, Utah. The league's eight head coaches selected the all-conference first and second teams, Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. The soccer championship begins Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Ute Field on the University of Utah campus.

Sophomore forward Adele Letro of Utah garnered MWC Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Ute senior goalkeeper Ashley Mason earned the MWC Defensive Player of the Year award. Andrea Willis of BYU and Kelly Isleib of Utah were selected as MWC Co-Freshmen of the Year, and Utah coach Rich Manning collected MWC Coach of the Year accolades for the third time as coach of the Utes. Utah won its third regular-season women's soccer championship this year.

BYU and Utah each had four players named to the all-MWC first team, while New Mexico, San Diego State and UNLV each had one first-team honoree.

Letro was tabbed as MWC Offensive Player of the Year after leading Utah to its third conference title and leading the league in goals (6) and points (12) in conference games. She also led the league in game-winning goals (5). Mason earned MWC Defensive Player of the Year honors as she led Utah to a perfect 7-0 record, including a school record seven straight shutouts. MWC Co-Freshmen of the Year honors went to BYU defender Andrea Willis and Utah midfielder Kelly Isleib. Willis led BYU to a second-place finish in the MWC with a 4-1-2 record, while anchoring a defense that only allowed four goals. Isleib started all seven conference games and scored a goal in leading the Utes to a perfect season.

The Utes are the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship, Nov. 1-4, at Utah. Action gets underway Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
