COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The MWC title is up for grabs as teams enter the final week of regular season action. First-place Utah (No. 17 in the nation) will travel to second-place BYU (12-4-2, 4-1-0 MWC) on Saturday for a match that will determine the regular season champion and the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship, Nov. 5-8 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Utes are looking for their first outright title since joining the conference, while the Cougars are looking to win a share of the title for the first time since 1999, after being the outright regular season champions the past three years. Other MWC matches this weekend include New Mexico at Air Force and San Diego State at UNLV. Non-conference matches slated for this weekend are San Diego State vs. Gonzaga, New Mexico vs. Michigan State and Wyoming vs. Denver. The MWC has 40 wins this season against non-conference competition.
MWC Quick Hits
Air Force
Air Force has been outscored 12-0 in five MWC losses.
The Falcons conclude their 2003 regular season on Friday at home against New Mexico. Last season, AFA defeated UNM, 1-0, in the regular season, but lost, 1-0, in the MWC Tournament. Air Force is 10-6 all-time and 3-1 at home against the Lobos.
BYU
With its 5-1 win over Wyoming last week, BYU remains perfect all-time in MWC play against three teams: Air Force, UNLV and Wyoming.
Saturday's match against No. 17 Utah will be the Cougars's sixth against a ranked opponent. BYU is 3-1-1 this season against ranked competition.
New Mexico
Junior goalkeeper Kristen Winters is third in the MWC in saves per game (6.13) and fourth in total saves (92).
San Diego State
Goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson's seven shutouts this season leads the MWC.
San Diego State's double overtime match at New Mexico marked its fifth extra session match of the season which is a new team record. The 1998 squad played in four overtime matches.
Forward Becky Prilaman scored the game-winning goal against Air Force on Friday, heading in a corner kick from Kim Castellanos. The goal was Prilaman's second of the season, while Castellanos earned her first assist of 2003.
UNLV
The Rebels posted their seventh shutout of the season on Sunday against Air Force, tying the school record set in 2001.
The win over the Falcons snapped a seven-match winless streak, the longest in school history.
Junior Annii Magliulo scored her eighth goal of the season and fourth game-winner against Air Force, which ties her for second all-time at UNLV with 22 career goals. She also ranks second in career points with 55 (22 goals, 11 assists).
UNLV played in two overtime matches last weekend and has played in four this season. The most overtime matches in a season for the Rebels was six in 2001.
Utah
Utah has its most wins (14) through 16 games in school history. The Utes' previous best start was last season when they went 11-2-3 through 16 games.
The Utes have tied a school record for conference wins with five. Utah went 5-1 in its first year as an MWC member in 1999, tying for the conference title. A win Saturday would give Utah its first outright conference title since joining the Mountain West.
Utah is 2-1-0 against NSCAA/Adidas Top 25 teams this season.
The Utes have nine shutouts this season, including four in their last five MWC matches. Utah has given up more than one goal in just two matches in 2003, winning both contests.
Utah has been shutout only twice this season, falling to No. 6 Texas A&M and Sacramento State, 1-0. The Utes have scored at least three goals in a match four times, including a season-high four against No. 17 Michigan on Aug. 31.
The Utes freshmen goalkeepers have held up well this season. Kaycie Zimmerman has allowed just five goals in 664 minutes, has 18 saves with a 0.68 goals against average and has 3.2 shutouts. Ashley Mason has given up only four goals in 789 minutes this year, has 37 saves with a 0.46 goals against average and has 4.2 shutouts.
Wyoming
The Cowgirls finished MWC play with their best record ever at 4-2-0. Prior to this season, their best conference finish was 1-3-2 in 2001.
Wyoming scored eight goals in conference play this season, compared to just three goals last season.
Senior goalkeeper Lori Scheider has six shutouts and a league-high 123 saves going into the last weekend of competition.
The Cowgirls close out the regular season with a home match against Denver on Sunday.
