COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - No. 20 Utah and Wyoming sit on top of the MWC standings at 4-0 after the second week of conference action. The Utes and Cowgirls will go up against each other on Saturday, Oct. 25, in Salt Lake City, possibly for the top spot in the MWC standings. The Cowgirls will take on second-place BYU (11-4-1 overall, 3-1-0) in Provo on Friday, Oct. 24, to open up the MWC slate for the week. The other conference matches for the week are San Diego State at Air Force, UNLV at New Mexico, UNLV at Air Force and San Diego State at New Mexico. There are no non-conference matches scheduled this week. On the season, the Mountain West has 40 non-conference victories.

MWC Quick Hits

Air Force

* Air Force has been outscored 10-0 in three MWC road losses.

* The Falcons play their three remaining regular-season matches at home where the team is 5-1 this season. AFA has outscored its opponents 12-4 in six home matches in 2003.

* Air Force takes on San Diego State and UNLV this weekend. Last season the Falcons lost 1-0 in overtime matches to the Aztecs and Rebels. AFA is 1-5 all-time against SDSU and 4-4 all-time versus the Rebels.

BYU

* Head coach Jennifer Rockwood coached her 200th career game last week and came out with a win against UNLV (3-2), improving her overall record to 153-43-4 (.782).

 

 

* After winning 15-consecutive regular season MWC matches, the Cougars lost to San Diego State, 1-0, last week to snap the streak.

* The Cougars are 3-2 on the road this season and have managed to outscore their opponents, 11-7. Only one of their seven shutouts on the season have come on the road.

New Mexico

* Junior goalkeeper Kristen Winters is third in the MWC in saves per game (6.31) and fourth in total saves (82).

San Diego State

* San Diego State ended a five-game losing streak to BYU with its 1-0 victory last week. The win was SDSU's first over the Cougars since a 2-1 win on Oct. 16, 1999. The Aztecs' six wins over BYU is the most of any Cougar opponent.

* Goalkeeper Stephanie Pearson recorded her fifth shutout of the season against BYU.

* Defender Shannon McBride earned her first points as an Aztec with her assist on Noelle Jouglet's goal against BYU.

UNLV

* Junior forward/midfielder Annii Magliulo is tied for second in the MWC in points (17), third in goals (7) and fourth in points per game (1.06) and goals per game (0.44).

Utah

* Utah has its most wins (13) through 15 games in school history. The Utes previous best start was last season when they went 11-1-3 before suffering their second loss.

* Utah has eight shutouts this season and has given up more than one goal in just two games, winning both contests (3-2 overtime wins over Colgate and Baylor).

* Utah's No. 19 ranking in the NSCAA/Adidas poll last week equaled its best in school history. The Utes were also ranked 19th in the NSCAA poll on Sept. 29.

* The Utes freshmen goalkeepers have held up well this season. Kaycie Zimmerman has allowed just five goals in 664 minutes, has 18 saves with a 0.68 goals against average and has 3.2 shutouts. Ashley Mason has given up only four goals in 699 minutes this year, has 36 saves with a 0.51 goals against average and has 3.2 shutouts.

Wyoming

* Wyoming is 4-0 in MWC play for the first time in school history. Prior to this season the Cowgirls had never won more than one conference match in a single season. They had a total of two MWC wins in the first four seasons in the conference.

* The Cowgirls are off to their best start in the their eight year history. Their nine wins so far this season are the most ever by a Wyoming women's soccer squad.

* The Cowgirls have won five consecutive matches this year, which is their longest win streak in school history.

* Wyoming has scored seven goals and allowed just one goal in MWC play this season. In 2002, the Cowgirls scored a total of three goals and gave up 14 goals in six conference games.
