CONFERENCE LEADERS FACE OFF THIS WEEK
BYU and San Diego State are both currently 2-0 in conference play and will
face off in Provo, Utah this Thursday at 6 p.m. (MT).The Cougars will also
face the only other undefeated team in the league in UNLV on Saturday, while
the Aztecs face Utah the same day. Before playing the Cougars, the Rebels
will travel to Utah for a Thursday afternoon match. Other conference action
this week includes New Mexico hosting Air Force Friday and playing at
Wyoming Saturday. The Cowgirls will be the only league team to play out of
conference this week as they host South Alabama Friday.
Century Mark
BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood became the first women¹s soccer coach in
the MWC to reach the 100-win mark for her career. Rockwood captured victory
100 as the Cougars defeated Milwaukee-Wisconsin, 2-0, on Sept. 23. She is
currently 103-25-2 in just over five seasons in Provo. Entering this season,
Rockwood was ranked fifth among active coaches by winning percentage. She
has averaged 18.6 wins per season over the past five years, which ranks
second behind only Anson Dorrance of North Carolina for wins per season.
Dorrance has won an average of 22.2 matches per season.
Chuck Clegg is seven wins away from his 100th career victory at San Diego
State with a 93-49-5 record. The Aztecs have five regular-season matches
remaining and the conference tournament.
Monumental year for Cowgirls
The 2000 Wyoming women¹s soccer team became the winning team in the schools¹
young soccer history with its 2-0 win at Idaho State on Sept. 30. The
Cowgirls have won six matches this season, breaking the old record of five
set in 1998. Wyoming is also 4-4 on the road this season, marking its best
record away from Laramie in the program¹s history. Prior to this season the
Cowgirls were 2-47 on the road.
South FIELD DOMINANCE
BYU has been unbeatable at South Field in the past year and a half. The
Cougars have not lost in 19 consecutive home matches. BYu is currently
18-0-1 on South Field with its lone tie coming against then-10th-ranked
Southern California (1-1). Last season, the Cougars went 12-0 at home and
are currently 5-0-1 this season. The last time BYU lost at home was on Nov.
7, 1998 to San Diego State (2-1 in ot) in the championship match of the
Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The last regular season defeat on
South Field was also to the Aztecs (1-0 on Oct. 24, 1998).
REBELS TOUGH AT HOME
UNLV is 5-0 at home in 2000 and is outscoring its opponents 12-6 in those
contests. This is the third straight season the Rebels have started their
home slate with at least a 4-0 record. UNLV is 15-6-1 all-time at Peter
Johann Memorial Field.
Streaks
Utah had its 14-match scoring streak halted by conference foe New Mexico
Oct. 3. The last time the Utes were shutout was on Oct. 30, 1999 vs. Long
Beach State (1-0). BYU now holds the longest active scoring streak at 12.
Hat Tricks
Michelle Jensen-Peterson became the first player in Mountain West Conference
history to record two hat tricks in one season. Jensen-Peterson scored her
first trick in a 6-1 victory vs. Creighton on Sept. 7, and notched her
second at Utah on Oct. 7.
Wyoming senior forward Kelly McShane is the only other player in the league
to have accomplished the feat. She recorded not only the first of her
career, but the first-ever in Wyoming women¹s soccer history in the 5-1 win
over Eastern Washington on Sept. 1. ]
MWC Quick Shots
Air Force concludes its eight match road trip on Thursday at New Mexico. In
14 matches played this season, the Falcons have had just four hame contests
ŠBYU is 11-2 at home vs. MWC teams, with both losses coming to San Diego
State. The Cougars host the Aztecs on ThursdayŠNew Mexico has won three of
its five contests this season by shutout. It has also been shutout three of
its five defeatsŠSan Diego State freshman Kim Castellanos set a MWC record
for shots in a match with 10 vs. Wyoming ŠUNLV is 9-4 on the year, breaking
its previous highest win total of eight set in the program¹s inaugural
season in 1998ŠUtah has been outscoring opponents 16-5 in the first half of
matches this season, while being outscored in the second half 17-19ŠThe 2000
Wyoming women¹s soccer team became the winningest team in the schools short
soccer history with its 6-5 win.
