MWC Women's Soccer Players of the Week

BYU's Larkin and New Mexico's Ley and Abeyta honored.

Sept. 18, 2006

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU sophomore midfielder Katie Larkin and New Mexico junior midfielder Katelyn Ley have been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while New Mexico senior defender Alanna Abeyta has been named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Larkin, from Draper, Utah, scored the game-winner in both of BYU's games over the weekend. She earned five shots and four shots on goal in both wins against Pacific (1-0) and Utah State (1-0 OT). Larkin leads the Cougars with three goals and seven points on the season.

Ley, a Marine, Minn., native, scored two goals and collected an assist to highlight the Lobos 4-0 victory over UTEP on Sunday, Sept. 17. She tallied the game-winner in the 13th minute and had her first multiple goal game of her career. Ley found the net twice and had an assist in the 63rd minute, after she sent the ball into sophomore Asha Richardson for the header. Ley also helped UNM snap a six-game winning streak for the Miners (7-2-0) and broke the UTEP school record of 568:48 scoreless minutes.

Abeyta, hailing from Albuquerque, N.M., helped UNM shutout UTEP, 4-0, Sunday and scored her first goal of the season. She played every minute of the match and helped orchestrate a back line that only allowed eight shots. Abeyta and UNM snapped a six-game winning streak by UTEP and moved to 4-3-0 on the year.
