COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Three matches against top-25 opponents highlights the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer schedule, as all seven institutions will see action this week. The MWC went 1-0-1 against top-25 competition in its opening week of the season, with Utah beating No. 17 Michigan, 4-1, in Salt Lake City and BYU tying the Wolverines, 0-0 (2 OT), in Provo. The Utes (2-0-0) start their week at No. 6 Texas A&M, while BYU (1-0-1) welcomes No. 16 Tennessee to South Stadium to start its week. Both matches are scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5. UNLV will also take on the 16th-ranked Volunteers on Sunday, Sept. 7 in Las Vegas. The Mountain West Other notable matches on the schedule are Wyoming vs. Northern Colorado, San Diego State hosting Long Beach State, New Mexico at UC Irvine and Air Force vs. Army.
MWC Quick HitsAir Force * Air Force's 2-0 start this season is its best since joining Division I in 1996. * Junior midfielder Cookie Day had five points last weekend with two goals (including game-winner vs. Fairfield) and one assist. * Sophomore midfielder Meredith Benson had two goals and one assist in the win over Northern Illinois. * The Cougars played to a capacity crowd of 2,191 in its home opener against No. 17 Michigan, which was the largest crowd in South Stadium history. The previous attendance record was 2,171, set on Nov. 9, 1996 against San Diego State.
* BYU outshot Michigan and Colgate by margins of 13-5 and 23-6, respectively. * Senior forward/midfielder Lydia Ojuka had seven shots-on-goal last weekend. New Mexico * New Mexico's match at Texas Tech was cancelled after the first half due to lightning. * After being outshot 12-5 in the first half against Oklahoma, the Lobos came back to outshoot the Sooners, 6-5, in the second half. San Diego State * With her goal against UC Irvine, senior forward Kim Castellanos now has 31 career goals. She is three goals behind Catherine McGuire for second all-time on the SDSU charts. * The Aztec's 0-2 start this season is their worst start since 1995, when they lost to Portland and Oregon State to open the season. * SDSU's six home games this season are its fewest since 1990. UNLV * UNLV is 2-0 on the season, with two shutouts. Utah * Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Mason has only given up one goal in 135 minutes so far this season. She played the second half against Colgate, shutting out the Raiders in 45 minutes and making three saves. She played the entire game against No. 17 Michigan and had a shutout until the 76th minute and had four saves. * The win over Michigan improved Utah's record against teams ranked in the NSCAA/Adidas Top-25 poll to 3-0 at Ute Field under second-year head coach Rich Manning. The Utes defeated fourth-ranked Portland, 2-0, and 18th-ranked Kentucky, 3-0, last season. * Senior foward Missy Dennis scored two goals and assisted on another to pace Utah's 3-2 season opening victory over Colgate. Wyoming * In her first collegiate match, freshman forward Christine Nagel led the Cowgirls with three-shots-on-goal for the match. * Of the 16 Cowgirls to see game action against Georgia, five were true freshmen. Along with Christine Nagel, defender Kristin Gurrola, Chelsey Anderson, Carolyn Clarke and Katie Humberson all saw action in their collegiate debuts. |
