MWC Women's Soccer Players of the Week Utah's Brower and BYU's Jense take home conference honors.
Sept. 1, 2003 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah senior midfielder Amber Brower and BYU freshman defender Nicole Jensen have been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. This is the first weekly honor for both recipients. Brower, a Hyrum, Utah, native, scored two goals and had an assist as the Utes defeated Colgate and No. 17 Michigan last weekend. In Utah's 3-2 season opening victory over Colgate, she knocked in a goal from the left corner in the 36th minute to tie the game at two apiece. Against the 17th-ranked Wolverines, Brower put the game out of reach in the 41st minute with her goal (assisted by Tracy Stratton and Carisse Winegar) from five yards out, making the score 3-0. She helped wrap up the Utes scoring by assisting Carisse Winegar's goal in the 47th minute, as Utah went on to beat Michigan, 4-1.
Jensen, a Denver, Colo., product, was the defensive catalyst in the Cougars two shutouts last weekend. In BYU's 0-0 tie against No. 17 Michigan, she helped hold the Wolverines, who averaged 14.6 shots per game in 2002, down to five total shots (three on goal) in the contest. In the 2-0 win over Colgate, Jensen turned in another strong defensive performance and managed to push the ball to the Cougar forwards to start the offensive game. The Cougars defense held Colgate's tandem of Kate Barrett and Kelly Kuss to three total shots on goal.
