Nov. 26, 2002
PROVO, Utah - Sue Nyhus, BYU head women's golf coach announced the signing of two top recruits Thursday. Nyhus signed Racheal Newren, the No. 1 women's golfer in the state of Utah and Alexis Edwards, a top junior golfer from Northern California. "We're pleased with the decision of Rachael (Newren) and Alexis (Edwards) to come to BYU, and we expect both to come right in and have an immediate impact on this team," Nyhus said. Newren, a senior at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City, has been the player of the Year in Utah the past two years and brings with her a long list of national and state golf accolades.
She qualified for the 2002 Westfield Junior PGA Championship where she placed 31st. Newren placed 22nd at the 2002 Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic National Finals in Houston, Texas. Newren has also qualified for many other national junior golf tournaments including the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur and Junior World. The past two years Newren has also been one of four individuals invited to represent Utah in the Girls Junior Americas Cup Team Matches.
Locally, Newren has been named the UGA Golfer of the Year for her age division the past five seasons. She was the 2001 UGA Winterchamps medalist and won the 2002 Utah Junior Open by nine strokes (70-74-144). She has also earned medalist honors at the Region III championships in 2000 and 2001. She was also runner-up at the 2001 Utah State Amateur losing to former Cougar Carrie Summerhays in the finals. "She (Newren) is a perfect match for our program," Nyhus said. "She's a strong leader that is ready to come right in and be an impact player right away." Newren is the senior class vice president, golf team captain and DECA president at Cottonwood High School. Newren is also the younger sister of current BYU golfers Nicole Newren and Natalie Newren. With the addition of Rachel Newren, BYU will have all three sisters on its roster next fall. Edwards, from Antioch, Calif., is a two-sport star at Deer Valley High School where she has been the team MVP and named first-team all-league all four years of high school. She also earned all-league honors in softball the past three seasons. "Alexis is a high achiever," Nyhus said. "She plays four musical instruments and has a 4.0 GPA while playing two sports. This just shows you the type of talent she brings with her to BYU." This past fall Edwards placed second at the NCGA/CIF Girls High School Championships. She has also qualified for several national tournaments including the 2002 USGA's Girls Amateur in New Jersey. This past summer Edwards placed second at the PGA Junior Series in Nevada and in the Northern California Westerfield PGA Championship. She also earned top-10 finishes in the JGANC Championships and the USGA Qualifier at Stevinson Ranch, California. Edwards earned medalist honors in several Northern California junior tournaments including the Novato Junior and the Mountain Shadows Junior Classic. |
