BYU Heads Into Denver Final Three Strokes Off Lead

Carrie Summerhays is leading the team effort.

Sept. 25, 2001

PROVO, Utah - BYU is tied at fourth (297) after one round of the 2001 Pioneer Highlands Ranch Women's Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in Highlands Ranch, Colo.

Just three shots off the lead, head coach Sue Nyhus said, "We're still in the hunt to win this tournament." Nyhus attributes the great surge Monday to senior leadership. "The senior leadership of this team is fantastic. It's refreshing to have such a positive hard-working group."

Nyhus said, "So far this season the team is averaging 10 strokes lower per round than last season."

BYU's Carrie Summerhays is leading the team effort after shooting a 69 on the par-72 course. "Carrie is playing with confidence right now," Nyhus said. "She started out hot going birdie, birdie, birdie on her first three holes and then played solid all day long."

Nicole Newren finished the first round right behind Summerhays, tied at fourth with a 71. Jessica Gardner and Lisa Dernick finished the day strong, tied for 36th and 44th respectively. "Lisa made a great comeback today after struggling early."

The Highlands Ranch Golf Club features a par-72 course over 6,252 yards and is host to 14 teams and nine individuals. The final round of the 36-hole tournament begins Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 8 a.m.
