Four MWC Women's Golf Teams Earn NCAA Regional Bids BYU, New Mexico, TCU and UNLV all advance to the postseason.
April 30, 2007 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference will have four teams represented in the 2007 NCAA Women's Golf Regional, announced Monday by the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee. TCU earned the automatic berth after winning the conference championship in St. George, Utah, last week and will be joined by BYU, New Mexico and UNLV. No. 24 TCU, which is making its 12th consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals, will play as the seventh seed in the Central Regional, May 10-12. The Horned Frogs will be looking for a trip to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2000, when they placed 20th. This year's Central Regional will be played at the University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich. In the West Regional, which will be played May 10-12 at Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah, BYU earned the No. 5 seed; New Mexico, the No. 8 seed; and UNLV, the No. 11 seed. No. 16 BYU is making its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals. The Cougars' No. 5 seed is their best in school history and 13th NCAA appearance in the last 15 years. BYU, led by MWC Co-Player of the Year Rachel Newren, is looking to return to the NCAA Championship after finishing 24th in 2005. No. 19 New Mexico's appearance at the 2007 West Regional marks the 15th consecutive year the Lobos have made postseason action (every year since regional play was introduced in 1993). The Lobos will be looking for their first trek to the NCAA Championship since 2004, when the team placed tied for 15th place at the Grand National Course in Opelika, Ala. New Mexico is led by freshman Jodi Ewart, who earned Freshman of the Year and Co-Player of the Year honors in the MWC. UNLV is making its fifth-straight NCAA Regional appearance in the just the six-year history of the program. The Rebels finished sixth at last year's West Regional and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the second time in three years. Freshman Da Sol Chung placed third individually at last year's national championship, while the Rebels finished 22nd as a team.
A total of 324 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region. The championships finals will be held May 22-25 at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, Fla., hosted by the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Sports Commission. |
