New Mexico Drops to Third at NMSU Intercollegiate

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The sixth-ranked University of New Mexico women's golf team drops to third with a tournament score of 603 (+27) after the second round of the 2002 Price's Give'em Five Intercollegiate being held in Las Cruces, N.M. The Lobos shot a second round 304 and are seven-shots behind host New Mexico State at 596 (+20) and second place Baylor 601 (+25). Rounding out the top-five inlcude San Jose State (610), and Oklahoma (611).

New Mexico State is hosting the three-day event at the University Golf course which plays to a par 72 on 6,303 yards.

Leading the tournament individually is NMSU's Alena Sharp who shot a second round 69 to card a 143 for the tournament (-1). New Mexico's Katrina Leckovic is the top Lobo at tied for 12th place with a 150 (+6 -- 75-75).

Lobo sophomore Kailin Downs is next at tied for 20th after shooting a 74 (+2) for the round and is at 152 for the tournament (+8). Sophomores Shannon Johnson and Christina Spence are both tied for 26th place with identical scores of 154 (+10). Johnson shot a second round 80 , while Spence shaved off four strokes off her first round 79, carding a 75. Kellyn Newman, who led after the first round, struggled and is tied for 41st with a two-round score of 157 (+13).

The final round will be played tomorrow with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. New Mexico will then take a break before heading to the Stanford Invitational on Oct. 18-20 in Stanford, Calif.
