Leading The League

Rebels hold team, individual lead at conference championship.

April 24, 2003

BEND, Ore. - Despite a change in both the venue and the start time, the UNLV women's golf team was able to overcome all obstacles in posting a tournament-best first round score of 305 at the Mountain West Conference Championship on Thursday.

The Rebels hold the team lead by four strokes over Colorado State and boast the individual leader in freshman Sunny Oh. Oh carded the day's best round, a one-over-par 73 at Awbry Glen Golf Club (Par 72, 6,110 Yards).

The championship was moved to the Bend, Ore., course after snow covered the Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort, the intended site. After a four-hour snow delay and a change of venue, the day's play began.

Oh holds just a single stroke lead over New Mexico's Katrina Keckovic heading into Friday's second round of three.

Her 73 also led the team's score, which included a 76 by Hwanhee Lee and a pair of 78s from Christine Hentzner and Erin Borcherts. The Rebels' fifth player, Elena Kurokawa, shot 79.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the first round was the 316 shot by 12th-ranked New Mexico. The Lobos have won all three Mountain West Conference women's golf titles since the league's inception in 1999.

Second-round play is currently scheduled to return to Sunriver and begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on Friday, April 25.
