Women's Basketball Update - Jan. 20

After two weeks of conference play, Wyoming leads the way with a perfect 4-0 record. Utah is close behind, posting a 3-0 record after defeating BYU on the road.

Utah 80, BYU 49
Provo, Utah Sat., Jan. 19, 2008
  • Utah built a 22-0 lead on the Cougars as all five Ute starters combined to score the first 10 points of the game.
  • Utah's Leilani Mitchell scored a season- and game-high 26 points, shooting almost 51 percent (29-of-57) from the field. Mitchell has scored 20+ points in five of her last six games.
  • BYU set a new women's basketball attendance record with 6,206 fans vs. Utah.
  • The 31-point loss to Utah marks the first time since 1996 that the Utes defeated the Cougars by at least 30 points.

New Mexico 75, Air Force 45
Colorado Springs, Colo. Sat., Jan. 19, 2008
  • Air Force's Brooke Cultra led the Falcons in points (14), rebounds (5) and assists (4).
  • New Mexico made a season-high 13 3-pointers, while shooting its second-best percentage of the season at 61.9 percent. The 13 3-point field goals made are just two short of the UNM record of 15 set in 1996 against BYU and Tennessee State.
  • New Mexico's Amy Beggin and Brandi Kimble set individual career-highs in 3-points shooting with six and four made, respectively.

  • TCU's Helena Sverrisdottir scored a career-high 20 points, including a career-high three treys. She also connected on 8-of-15 field-goal attempts (.533).
  • BYU TCU's win marked the its fifth win in six straight games.
  • Colorado State's Amaka Uzomah and Bonnie Barbee scored career highs with 10 rebounds and nine points, respectively.

Wyoming 65, San Diego State 49
Laramie, Wyo. Sat., Jan. 19, 2008
  • Wyoming was led by Hanna Zavecz, who scored 21 points, pulled down seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks. She was 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line.
  • Wyoming is now 16-1 on the season, marking its best start in school history.
  • Despite the loss, San Diego State grabbed a season-best 23 offensive boards to the Cowgirls' five. The Aztecs also owned a 42-29 advantage on the glass.
