Falcons Fly Past Rams, 76-60 Lindsay Thomas led Rams with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Feb. 2, 2006
A double-double and season-high tying 18 points by senior Lindsay Thomas was not enough to prevent Air Force from pushing the Colorado State women's basketball team's losing streak to seven. The Rams fell to 7-12 overall, 1-7 in the Mountain West, following Thursday night's 76-60 loss in Moby Arena. The Falcons improved to 11-8 and 2-6 in the MWC, defeating Colorado State in Fort Collins for the first time since 1979. Early on, the Rams and Falcons seemed to be very evenly matched with two ties and one lead change in the first 9:30 of the contest, as the Rams never trailed by more than six points during that stretch. Colorado State took its first, and only, lead of the game with 11:29 remaining in the first half on the heels of back-to-back three-point baskets by Sara Hunter and Liz Kramer. However, the Falcons answered with two-straight treys of their own to take the lead that they would never relinquish. After the Rams cut the lead to one point, 27-26 with 6:22 remaining in the half, Air Force closed out the first stanza of action on an 11-4 run and held an eight-point advantage, 38-30, going into the locker room. To begin the second half, the Rams were held to just one field goal, in the first nine minutes as the Falcons pushed the lead to 17 points, 55-38 with 11:57 remaining in the game. Thomas, who scored 10 of her team-leading 18 points in the second half, was the only Ram player to connect on a field goal in the first 14 minutes after halftime. The Air Force lead reached its largest, 62-42, thanks in part to a 7-2 run that included five points from Letricia Castillo. Castillo, lead all scorers in the game with a career-high 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting, including 5-for-8 from long range. Alecia Steele also finished in double figures for Air Force with 18 points to match Thomas' output.
Sara Hunter added 11 points for the Rams and Marilyn Moulton chipped in with 10 points. Kramer finished with nine points in the contest, playing a career-high 40 minutes, as senior point guard Vanessa Espinoza has not played since being hit in the head at Wyoming on Jan. 25. The Rams will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, heading for warmer weather to take on the San Diego State Aztecs. Colorado State defeated SDSU 68-65 in Moby Arena on Jan. 5, the team's last victory. Game time is set for 3 p.m. MT/ 2 p.m. PT. |
