Matt Amgwerd, Sr., New Mexico
New Mexico senior Matt Amgwerd (Delemont, Switzerland) is the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Men¹s Tennis Player of the Week.

Ranked among the top-20 in the nation in singles all season, Amgwerd claimed his first player of the week honor of the season after helping guide the Lobos to victories over BYU (5-2) and UNLV (4-3) during the week. Playing in the No. 1 slot, he claimed a straight-set (6-3, 6-2) win over BYU¹s Damien Ward on Mar. 31. Amgwerd battled UNLV¹s Vladimir Pavicevic for three sets before prevailing 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the top-slot on Apr. 2. He teamed with two different partners in doubles during the week and split the matches. Paired with Nic Dubey in the top-slot, he lost (8-3) to BYU¹s tandem of Lozano and Ward. Playing with Michael Polasek in the No. 2 position against UNLV, the duo defeated the team of Erez and Pavicevic, 8-5. The winner in 14 of his last 16 matches, Amgwerd owns 31 singles victories this season equalling the most by a UNM men¹s player since Pablo Fernandez went 33-10 in 1995. He boasts a 15-4 record in spring duals, including a 10-4 mark at No. 1 singles and is currently ranked No. 17 in the nation in singles and No. 19 in doubles with Dubey.

New Mexico Host of 2000 Mtn. West Men¹s Tennis Championship
The inaugural Mountain West Conference Men¹s Tennis Championship will be hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. All six Mtn. West men¹s tennis teams will compete in the straight-draw team event for the first league title April 20-22. First-round losers shall move to the consolation bracket and first-round winners to the championship bracket in the single-elimination event. There is not an official regular-season Mtn. West conference schedule, however dual match results against conference members will be a factor in determining tournament seeding. All requests for media credentials for the inaugural Mountain West Conference Men¹s Tennis Championship should be submitted in writing to Director of Communications Elaine Adams at the Mtn. West office or New Mexico Media Relations contact Georgette Lombardo prior to the event.

Regular-Season Ends This Week
This is the final week of regular-season play for men¹s tennis as all six teams will take the final week before the conference championships to prepare. UNLV and San Diego State have already played their final dual matches. The Rebels lost their season-finale to New Mexico 4-3 on Apr. 2, while the Aztecs capped the season with their eighth consecutive win as they swept crosstown rival San Diego on Apr. 4.

BYU and Utah will square off in the final match between conference foes today (Apr. 5). The Cougars will conclude the regular-season at Weber State on Apr. 11. The Utes will travel to California for three matches against No. 12 Fresno State, No. 33 California and No. 4 Stanford. Air Force will wrap the season at the University of Denver on Apr. 8. New Mexico finishes the season at No. 40 New Mexico State.
