MWC Weekly Tennis Awards UNLV's Joel Kielbowicz and New Mexico's Iva Gersic net honors
March 23, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV's Joel Kielbowicz and New Mexico's Iva Gersic have been named the Mountain West Conference men's and women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. A senior from Las Vegas, Nev., Kielbowicz led the Rebels to an upset victory over No. 52 South Carolina (5-2) last week. Playing at the No. 1 singles position, he defeated No. 115 Tom Eklund (6-0, 6-1), marking his second straight win over a ranked opponent. He also teamed with David Campbell to defeat South Carolina in No. 1 doubles (8-5). Kielbowicz is 8-3 at No. 1 singles and 9-4 in doubles play with Campbell this season. A junior from Koprivnica, Croatia, Gersic was the only Lobo to go unbeaten in four matches last week, while helping New Mexico to a split of two ranked opponents. The Lobos defeated No. 49 Sacramento State (6-1) and fell to No. 17 Pepperdine (1-6). Gersic highlighted the week with a victory at No. 2 singles over Pepperdine's Natalie Barverman (3-6, 6-2 [10-8]), the 93rd-ranked player in the polls. She also posted a win at No. 1 singles over Sacramento State's Margarita Karnaukhova (1-6, 7-5 [10-6]). Gersic teamed with Maja Kovacek to post a pair of wins in doubles play, keeping their unbeaten duo record in tact this season.
