Sensational Swede BYU senior Erik Nyman named MWC Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Feb. 26, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU senior Erik Nyman and New Mexico sophomore Maja Kovacek have been named Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively. Nyman, from Upsala, Sweden, upset Guillaume Bouvier (No. 41 singles player in the nation) in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) at No. 1 singles last week in BYU's loss to No. 34 Boise State. After easily winning the first set of the match, he battled back from a three-game deficit to secure his upset victory. Nyman is currently 16-10 overall (4-7 dual) on the season and thanks to his win last week now sits as the 58th-ranked singles player in the country.
Kovacek, a Pula, Croatia, native, led the previously 51st-ranked Lobos to two upset victories over then-No. 28 Oklahoma and then-No. 49 Tulsa last weekend, going 2-0 in singles and doubles competition. Against the Sooners, she defeated Irina Lykina (No. 76 in the nation) at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, and teamed with Sandy Lukowski (No. 16 doubles tandem in the nation) to beat Anda Perianu and Heather Saluri, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. In UNM' 5-2 win over the Golden Hurricanes, Kovacek was victorious over Donata Majauskaite at the No. 2 singles position, 6-1, 6-2. She also teamed with Lukowski to beat Daniela Muscolino and Ilona Somers at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Kovacek is 12-6 overall this season (5-2 dual) and is currently ranked the No. 57 singles player in the nation. Along with Lukowski, she is 15-6 overall (5-2 dual) in doubles action.
