SDSU's Goldberg Three Shots off the Lead at NCAA Regional

Aztec team six shots off qualifying pace for national tournament after first round

May 18, 2006

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sophomore Aaron Goldberg used the momentum from an eagle on the second hole to propel him to a 3-under-par score after the opening 18 holes of the NCAA West Regional at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz., on Thursday.

Goldberg recorded birdies on five, eight and 11 to go along with the eagle on two en route to his first round 69. He is currently tied for 15th place, three shots off the lead held by Dustin Pimm of Utah. As a team the Aztecs are in 18th place after carding a 2-over-par 290. San Diego State is 17 shots off the pace set by the tournament leader Florida. More importantly, the Aztecs are six shots in back of 10th place.

The 27 teams in the West Regional will play 18 holes on Friday and conclude with 18 holes on Saturday. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on advancing teams will move to the NCAA Championships to be held at the Crosswater Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The national championship will be conducted May 31-June 3.

Senior Josh Warthan also scored in the red for the Aztecs. Warthen carded a 1-under-par 71 on Thursday. After playing the front nine at 1-over, the Palm Beach, Calif. native birdied 14 and 16 to end up under par. He is tied for 38th out of the 141 golfers participating in the regional.

The other three Aztecs struggled a bit on the opening day. Sophomore David Palm was 5-over-par after 11 holes, but battled back with birdies on 13, 15 and 16 to end the round at 2-over-par. Senior Andrew Scott rode an up-and-down round to 4-over-par. He had a double bogey, six bogeys and four birdies to go along with seven pars. Sophomore Cory Segall played the back nine at 1-over-par and ended the day at 5-over-par.

The Aztecs are making their 11th appearance in the tournament since the field was expanded to include regional tournaments in 1989 and are looking to advance to the national tournament for the 19th time in school history. SDSU has advanced to the national championship three times (1999, 2003 and 2005) since the regional format debuted.
