Lobos Take 2nd Place at National Invitational Tournament

New Mexico finishes four shot behind tournament winner Arizona.

April 2, 2003

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Just four strokes separated the UNM men's golf team from sharing the National Invitation Tournament crown with host University of Arizona, as the Lobos finally found their game to post their best finish in three tournaments.

The Lobos finished in 2nd place with a three-day total of 874 (+10), which was four shots behind team winner Arizona (878, +6), and five shots ahead of third-place Texas Christian University (879, +15).

Individually for the Lobos, senior Michael Letzig matched the team's finish, carding a final-round 70 to finish at a 2-under par 214 in the three-day event, good for a second place tie. Madaltiso Muthiya, who began the day tied for 3rd place, fell to a tie for 10th place after his final round 76 gave him an overall score of 218 (+2). And the Lobos had one other top-25 finisher: freshman Jay Choi, who finished tied for 24th place (79-70-74=223, +7).

Following Choi were Jay Reynolds, who jumped from a tie for 50th place to 42nd place (74-79-74=227, +11) and Derek Abel, who fell from a tie for 30th place Monday to a tie for 43rd place, just one stroke behind Reynolds (78-78-72=228, +12).

For the Lobos it was their best finish in three tournaments. New Mexico had a 13th place finish at the Toyota Men's Intercollegiate, then followed that up with a 15th place Morris Williams Intercollegiate just more than a week ago. However, both the Toyota and Morris Williams fields were stacked with some of the nation's top teams, and prior to those tournaments, the Lobos finished tied for 2nd at the John Burns Invitational on February 21.

The Lobos are back in action April 11, at the ASU Thunderbird Intercollegiate, hosted by Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona.
