Bowl Hopes Rest On Lobos Eager To Put It All On The Line The Albuquerque Tribune Feature Story

By Richard Stevens ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Mark Paulsen is an old Lobo. For the third time, he is in his fifth season as the strength coach for a University of New Mexico football coach. He went five seasons with Mike Sheppard (1987-1991). He went the distance for six seasons with Dennis Franchione (1992-1997). He is in his fifth year with Rocky Long. Paulsen saw Sheppard bring in tons of skill players only to lose games in the trenches. He saw Franchione ride an outstanding senior class to a 9-4 mark, a division title, a trip to a bowl game and a better job. Paulsen says he has never seen the Lobos program in better shape than it stands in Long's fifth year. "If you go with the saying, `It all starts in the trenches,' then there is a bright future for UNM," said Paulsen, 43. "If you can dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, you always have a chance. That opportunity for dominance is there.
