San Juan Shootout Pairings Announced Runnin' Utes open against Central Florida in Dec. 19-21 event
July 20, 2006 SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball team will compete in the San Juan Shootout, Dec. 19-21 at the Mario Morales Coliseum in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. The San Juan Shootout is the longest running Division I college basketball tournament off the mainland, heading into its 20th year. The Runnin' Utes will face Central Florida in the first round on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 12:00 p.m. (MST). Central Florida, a member of Conference USA, returns three starters while looking to improve upon last season's 14-15 overall record. Utah's second round opponent will be either Virginia from the ACC or the Southern Conference's Appalachian State. The Cavaliers return all five starters from a 15-win, NIT squad a year ago. Appalachian State posted a 14-16 record last year, and also brings back all five starters. UVa and Appalachian State will play their quarterfinal round game at 2:00 p.m. (MST). Other San Juan Shootout first round match-ups include Vanderbilt against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and Northwestern versus Tennessee Tech. The tournament will continue on Wednesday, Dec. 20 with two consolation bracket games set for 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. (MST), followed by the two semifinal contests at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. (MST). The championship round on Thursday, Dec. 21 begins with the seventh place game at 8:00 a.m. (MST) followed by the consolation title at 10:00 a.m. (MST). The third place contest will begin at 12:00 p.m. (MST) with the championship game set for 2:00 p.m. (MST). Utah will field a young team in 2006-07 with just one senior and eight first-year players on Ray Giacoletti's roster. However, four starters return from the Utes' 14-15 team last season. Two of the Utah's returning players are junior guard Johnnie Bryant and sophomore center Luke Nevill, who both earned all-Mountain West Conference honorable mention.
