Several Falcons Playing Summer Baseball Seven current and former players in summer leagues throughout the world.
June 14, 2007 USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Seven current and former Air Force Academy baseball players are playing in summer baseball leagues throughout the world this summer. Three current and four former Falcons are playing in various leagues, including one player in the newly established Israel Baseball League. Seniors Chay Derbigny, Erol Kelter and Josh Meents will get valuable baseball experience in summer college leagues. Derbigny, an outfielder who led the team with 16 stolen bases and was second on the team with a .301 average is slated to play in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League (HCBL) for a team to be determined. Derbigny will play in the HCBL while stationed at Hickam AFB, Hawaii. Kelter, a reserve catcher who batted .265 in 27 games, returns to his home state to play for the Anchorage Bucs in the prestigious Alaska Baseball League. Kelter will play in the ABL while stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. Meents, the Falcons starting catcher in 2007, will play for the Yuba-Sutter Goldsox in Northern California. Meents will play for the Goldsox while stationed at Beale, AFB, Calif. Four former Falcons', Karl Bolt (Class of 2007), Mitch Brown (Class of 2007), Reid Lamson (Class of 2005) and Josh Zumbrun (Class of 2003) are also playing summer baseball. Brown and Lamson are playing for the United States Military All-Star Baseball Team, competing throughout the country. Lamson, who is currently stationed at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, was a standout on the 2005 Falcon baseball team earning team MVP honors after leading the Falcons with a .321 average, 18 stolen bases and 52 runs scored.
Brown, who is slated to report to Barksdale, AFB, La., was the Falcons' ace the past two seasons leading the team with a 5.87 earned run average to go with 49 strikeouts in 76.2 innings as a senior in 2007. Zumbrun, a 2003 graduate of the Academy is playing for the Ra'anana Express in the Israel Baseball League (IBL). Zumbrun led the Falcons with a 6.44 ERA in 64.1 innings pitched as a senior in 2003. Bolt, who was selected in the 15th round by the Philadelphia Phillies is currently training with fellow draft picks at the Phillies' training site in Clearwater, Fla., during his Air Force leave. Bolt will find out which minor league affiliate of the Phillies he will play for in the next week or so.
