Schroyer Selected In Fifth Round Of MLB Draft Shoemaker signs deal with Red Sox
June 7, 2004 SAN DIEGO - San Diego State closer Ryan Schroyer was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft on Monday, June 7, the first Mountain West Conference athlete chosen in the annual pro baseball selection process. Schroyer was the lone Aztec taken during day one of the first-year player draft, becoming the seventh SDSU player to be selected in the top five rounds over the past five seasons. Schroyer finished the 2004 season with 13 saves and a 2.85 earned run average. He struck out 50 and walked only nine over 41 innings, and his save total ranked fourth in the nation at the conclusion of the regular season. The senior-right-hander from Oracle, Ariz., was named to the All-Mountain West Conference team after finishing league play with seven saves and a 1.72 ERA. In other Aztec baseball news, pitcher Scott Shoemaker (Granite Hills HS/Grossmont JC/Long Beach State) signed a free-agent contract with the Boston Red Sox last week. As a fifth-year senior who was not selected in the 2003 amateur draft, he was eligible to sign with any team of his choosing up until seven days before the start of this year's draft.
Shoemaker was named 2004 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year after compiling a 6-1 record and a 3.95 earned run average in MWC competition (9-6, 3.99 overall). He led the conference with 110 strikeouts, a mark that ranks fifth on the SDSU single-season record list.
