Fifteen MWC Players Selected In 2001 Major League Baseball Draft

SDSU had the most players taken with seven.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West Conference had 15 players selected during the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft, held June 5-6 in New York City. San Diego State junior left-handed pitcher Marcos Mendoza was the conference's highest pick, selected by the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round.

SDSU had the most players taken with seven. In addition to Mendoza, SDSU junior outfielder Sean Pierce went to Los Angeles in the ninth round, senior left-handed pitcher Ben Julianel to St. Louis (12th round), senior left-handed pitcher Mike Garber to Arizona (18th round), senior right-handed pitcher John Skinner to Florida (24th round), junior third baseman Pilar Amaya to St. Louis (29th round), and junior outfielder/first baseman Ben Leuthard to Houston (48th round).

Utah had three players chosen, junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Bailey went to Anaheim in the 31st round, junior catcher Chris Shelton to Pittsburgh in the 33rd round, and junior right-handed pitcher Travis Palmer to St. Louis in the 41st round.

BYU had two players chosen, sophomore first baseman David Jensen went to Cleveland in the 17th round and sophomore shortstop Isaac Iorg to Toronto in the 19th round.

Meanwhile, Air Force, New Mexico and UNLV each had one selection. Junior left-handed pitcher Ryan Olson went to the New York Mets in the 10th round (UNLV), senior left-handed pitcher Chris Cooper to Cleveland in the 35th round (New Mexico), and senior outfielder Mike Thiessen to Arizona in the 42nd round (Air Force).
