Pairings Set For 2005 Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship

UNLV secures No. 1 seed for second time in three years

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Pairings were announced today for the 2005 Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship, which will be held May 25-28 at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The conference race came down to the final weekend of the regular season as UNLV and BYU were vying for the regular season MWC title and a No. 1 seed at the conference tournament. UNLV swept Utah, while BYU took two of three games from San Diego State. As a result, the Rebels finished the season at 23-7 in the league standings, while the Cougars finished at 21-9, allowing UNLV to claim the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship. The Rebels closed out the MWC race by winning nine straight games.

Two-time defending MWC Tournament champion UNLV (29-26, 23-7) enters the championship as the No. 1 seed for the second time in the last three years, while BYU (37-17-1, 21-9) earned the No. 2 seed. San Diego State (23-33, 17-13) finished third, while New Mexico (25-30, 15-15) claimed the fourth seed. The fifth and sixth seeds went to Utah (18-32, 10-20) and Air Force (9-42, 4-26), respectively.

The opening game of the tournament will see third-seeded San Diego State taking on No. 6 seed Air Force at 11 a.m. (all game times MT) on Wednesday, May 25, followed by No. 4 seed New Mexico vs. No. 5 seed Utah at 3 p.m. The 7 p.m. contest will be an elimination game between the losers of the first two games. The conference tournament format is double-elimination and the top two seeds have first-round byes.

No. 2 seed BYU will play the highest seed to advance from Wednesday's opening round games at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, while the No. 1 seed Rebels will face the lowest seed to advance from Wednesday on Thursday at 3 p.m. The championship is set for Saturday, May 28 at 3 p.m. (also 7 p.m. if necessary).

The MWC will provide livestats for all MWC Championship games. ESPN Radio, Denver (560 AM), will broadcast Friday's 7 p.m. semifinal game and Saturday's championship game. The ESPN Radio audio feed from the championship will also be available on the MWC website. Log on to the official MWC website (www.TheMWC.com) to follow the action.

The winner of the MWC Baseball Championship will earn an automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Show is scheduled for Monday, May 30 at 11:30 a.m. (ET) on ESPN.
