Player and Pitcher of the Week Air Force's Petro and SDSU's Coon take home conference honors.
May 19, 2003 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force senior catcher Dan Petro and San Diego State freshman lefthander Ben Coon are the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Both Petro and Coon are first-time award winners. Petro, from San Antonio, Texas (Churchill HS), led the Falcons with a .900 batting average last week, including three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI. He was a perfect 5-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored in Air Force's 17-11 victory to close out the series vs. BYU. He was 4-for-5 with four RBI in a 16-19 loss to the Cougars. Petro was also perfect in the field in nine chances and threw out three of the five runners attempting a stolen base.
Coon, from El Cajon, Calif. (Grossmont HS), earned his second victory of the year in conference play, which helped secure the No. 2 seed for San Diego State in this week's MWC Championship. He allowed two earned runs, walked two and struck out six in eight innings as the Aztecs picked up an 8-3 win over New Mexico.
